Thanks, John, for the Astronomy lesson. I often wondered why, if we get more sunlight after the solstice, our air temperatures continue to drop, at least here in the New York area, with the coldest weather during the 3rd week of January. Turns out that while the increased sunlight does warm the air, the actual air temperature is also determined by the reflection of heat off the earth's surface and it takes a bit longer for the surface to be warmed by the increased sun.
