Camp counsellor who was devoted to children with disabilities died in Texas flooding
Remembering Katherine Ferruzzo.
In Texas, local media have reported the recovery of the body of Katherine Ferruzzo who died in the flooding at Camp Mystic. Ms. Ferruzzo, who as 19 years old, was a counsellor at Camp Mystic.
When her body was found on 12 July 2025, Ms. Ferruzzo had been missing since the floods on the weekend of 4 July 2025. She was the last counsellor from Camp Mystic who was still missing.
Ms. Ferruzzo had volunteered with multiple organizations connected to children with disabilities. Among them were (a) Camp Acorn is associated with The Parrish School, which provides programs for “communication delays and learning differences”; (b) Gigi’s Playhouse (Houston, TX), is one of a US chain of programs therapeutic and educational programs for individuals with Down syndrome; and (c) Miracle League is a group dedicated to giving kids with disabilities opportunities to play baseball.
Saile Aranda of covered the story of Ms. Ferruzzo’s passing in “Body of Camp Mystic counselor found: Katherine Ferruzzo of Houston remembered for dedication to children,”1 for Houston Public Media. According to the report,
Ferruzzo was a recent graduate of Memorial High School in Houston, where she was known for her volunteer efforts to help children with disabilities.
She had planned to attend the University of Texas at Austin and eventually become a special education teacher.
Ms. Ferruzzo’s family members issued a statement in which they announced that they will create a foundation in her memory. “The Katherine Ferruzzo Legacy Foundation is being established to honor Katherine and her compassion for those with special needs and learning differences. We will share a link with donation details in the coming days..” The statement appeared in multiple reports including on CW 39, 11 Alve, and NBC 5.
