B. Nosek on changing scholarly publishing
What's Brian got to say about improving the knowledge base?
Brian Nosek, a leader in the “open science” movement, spoke at a Webinar for the Peer Community In on 19 September 2024. In his talk, entitled “Reimagining scholarly publishing to promote credible and trustworthy research,” he discussed how tension between the academy’s interest in communicating clearly about scientific work and the publishing world’s interest in generating profits. As many readers of Special Education Today know (or can guess!), Brian’s views tilt today the academy’s interests and he hopes to encourage we academics to advocate for those interests.
This topic is important for readers of SET not just because we can learn something intellectually, but also because (a) it provides background for supporting efforts by members of our team such as Bryan Cook and Bill Therrien (they’re editing a new journal, RiSE, based on open science principles) and (b) I hope that it leads to better scientific guidance for special education policy and practice.
