The J. Umbreit research award-2026
How about an award for student research in applied behavior analysis?
The Division for Emotional and Behavioral Health, the special interest groups in the Council for Exceptional Children that advocates for children and youth with disabilities, their families, and their educators, annually recognizes a doctoral student who conducts applied behavioral research in education, juvenile justice, psychology, and other areas related to emotional and behavioral disorders. The award is named in honor of John Umbreit, the eminent scholar and teacher educator and friend of Special Education Today.
The purpose of this award is to support an outstanding doctoral student to conduct applied behavioral research in their current area of practice. Eligible applicants are those who are enrolled in an accredited doctoral program, actively engaged in applied research to support improved behavior, and have an IRB-approved (or in process) research project in their specialty area. An award of $1,000 will be presented at the annual Teacher Educators for Children with Behavior Disorders (TECBD) conference in Tempe, Arizona. Award funds are intended to support applicant research activities and/or to present their findings at professional conferences. For information on this award, email awards@debh.net
In addition to the Umbreit award, DEBH offers other awards and grants, too. Among these is one that carries the name of another long-time SET pal and contributor: Doctor C. Michael Nelson Professional Development Grant. Others are named in honor of wonderful figures in the history of EBD, including Eleanor Guetzloe, Carl Fenichel, Lyndal Bullock, Doug Cheney, and Frank Woods.
