Thanks, Tom. He was a pretty special guy. It was pretty cool to hang out in the undergrowth of the Virginia countryside with an internationally acclaimed wonk on nuclear weapons and space. Wonderful times. He passed away in the summer of 2022.
Thank you for sharing about Michael - I enjoyed reading about all that he did. Today is the first day of classes for us; thus, I'm headed off to teach Assessment at 8am. :)
I often was awake too long over night and then up early. rehearsing my plans for that first class meeting.
As you may recall, Jane, I wanted to use those first class sessions instructional. I did not want the class to be limited to me greeting the students (“ice breakers” UGH), saying a few inspirational (at least to me) things, passing out the syllabus, and ending after 30 minutes with “see you next class!”
There were things to learn, things to do, things to teach!
I hope you have wonderful first classes and great semesters (or quarters?). Teach them well!
I am right there on the awake too long over night and up early! I still get nervous on the 1st day! We did pretty well. Went over the syllabus, went over Blackboard and how things were organized, went over how the flipped classroom is going to work, did a preview of the first chapter and packet, and then talked about what assessment is and is not and why we use it. Now, I get a break until this afternoon when I get to teach an Inclusion class open for all of our education majors. That's my large class with 20 students!
What a nice tribute to your friend, Michael. Thank you for sharing this. Made me smile.
