Sold a Story discussion guides for free
Wouldn't it be helpful to have thoughtfully aligned questions and resources for conversations about the widely known series of examinations of reading?
Margaret Goldberg and Emily Hanford provided a free set of what amount to lesson plans to accompany Ms. Hanford’s series of podcasts called Sold a Story from American Public Media. Most readers of Special Education Today will remember the fine series of documentaries that exposed problems in reading instruction from the 2022 through 2025s.
In this resource Ms. Hanford has joined with Margaret Goldberg to provide a resource for conversations about the podcasts. They have provided a guide for educators—but, really anyone—who wants to lead discussions about the podcasts of Sold a Story. Here’s their pitch:
You’ve listened to Sold a Story and now you have questions, thoughts, things you want to talk about. Maybe you want to organize a listening party, a professional development session, or a meeting at your child’s school. This discussion guide is designed to help you facilitate a conversation about ideas and themes in the podcast.
The guide aligns with episodes in Sold a Story, so that one could use it to accompany individual meetings. For example, one might have students or colleagues listen to a session of the podcast and then meet for a discussion. The guide for that particular podcast could be used to help structure the discussion and accentuate important aspects of the podcast.
In addition to Sold a Story, American Public Media has produced other excellent resources that readers of SET may find of interest. See “Sent away” and “Youths were abused here,” to learn about documentaries examine services for “troubled youths.”
