Romaine Mackie award nominations open
Whom could SETters nominate for this honor?
The Division of Leaders & Legacy of the Council for Exceptional Children solicited nominations of special educators who have made significant contributions to special education for the Romaine P. Mackie Award. The award recognizes a special educator for her or his contributions in areas such as policy, teacher education, administration, organizational service, research, and similar aspects of our endeavor. Nominations for the 2027 award are due by 1 October 2026.
Here is a full description of the award taken from the DL&L Web page (where one can find additional details, too):
The Romaine P. Mackie Award recognizes an outstanding member of the Division of Leaders and Legacy who has demonstrated exemplary leadership over an extended period of time within the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and other professional organizations. Nominees should have made significant contributions in one or more areas of the field, including service delivery, teacher education and professional development, research, policy, assessment, and publications.
At least a couple of members of the Special Education Today community have received this prestigious award over the course of its history. If one reviews a list of the previous recipients of the award, one can find the names of Bev Johns, Lisa Dieker, and others connected with SET.

Other than these two greta members of the SET community, I can think of a few folks who would be good nominees for the award. Whom might Dear Readers suggest?1 I don’t know whether any of those whom we might suggest would meet the DL&L membership eligibility criterion, but I’m pretty sure we could get help determining that. Spur your thinking by reflecting on these late pals of SET: Jim Kauffman, Rud Turnbull, and Lynn Fuchs.
Footnote
Please don’t suggest me. There are plenty of worthy folks and I do not need any additional honors!
