Alternative catch-up strategies and disparities in sex education

There were two recent reports from The Hechinger Report that readers of Special Education Today may find valuable. One report from late August examined ways to help students regain ground lost during the pandemic, and the other report from early September discussed influences on provision of sex education.

Laura Antunez wrote "The politics of sex ed leave a lot untaught." Perhaps in part because her article was about political influences on the teaching of sex education, she did not include disabilities or special education in her article. She did, however address important topics such as disparities in teaching about LGBTQ aspects of sex ed and emphasis on abstinence-only approaches.

Jill Barshay wrote "The science of catching up: Daily tutoring for those who are most behind rises to the top in research evaluations." Although she noted that students with disabilities are among the most vulnerable of students who suffered setbacks because of the pandemic, disabilities and special education are not the foci of her article. The good news is that Ms. Barshay's reporting is predicated on evidence of the effectiveness of strategies for helping students recover lost ground.
