Over in The Atlantic Idrees Kahloon published “America Is Sliding Toward Illiteracy.” Some of the readers will of Special Education Today may say, “Oh, no! The sky is falling!.” Others may shrug and say, “Oh, more on the NAEP results… I knew it.” Still others may say, “Oh, what’s new…but, well, what’s this person’s take?”
The answer to the last question is immediately apparent when one reads the sub-heading for Mr. Kahloon’s article: “Declining standards and low expectations are destroying American education.”
There you go! Got it? All we have to do is set higher goals and expect better. Give ‘em tough tests, change what we anticipate that they’ll do, and those kids will good become readers. Ta-dah!
Excuse me…I must wipe the drips of sarcasm falling from my nose. What bologna!
