In Canada and the US, the first Monday of September, is the day set aside to celebrate the contributions of labor to our society. There’s lots one can say about this, but over on “Letters from an American,” Heather Cox Richardson presented a wonderful history (well, she is a history prof) of Frances Perkins, the longest serving US Secretary of Labor; arguably, Ms. Perkins is the secretary who had the most influence on the US that we know today.

The US Department of Labor maintains Web pages about previous Secretaries of Labor, including one about Ms. Perkins. Readers may also want to review the Wikipedia entry about Ms. Perkins and the one for Labor Day.

Happy Labor Day, friends and neighbors!
