Down syndrome day again—2026
If it's 3-21, do you know what day it is?
If it is the 21st day of the 3rd month, then it is 3-21, as in trisomy of the 21st chromosome. And that is the day people around Earth celebrate Down syndrome. Now, “celebrate” may be a poor choice of words, but it is sorta-kinda-close to right. It’s at least a good day to celebrate the achievements and successes of individuals with Down syndrome.
Thanks to organizations like the Down Syndrome International and Global Down Syndrome Foundation1 there are links to events one can use to learn more about Down syndrome, the successes of people with trisomy of the 21st chromosome, and more. Are you sorry you missed the epic dance party 20 March? Well, check the links at those sites, and maybe plan for next year?
Interest in Down syndrome is international. Organizations in
Africa (African Down Syndrome Network),
Australia (Down syndrome Australia),
Europe (European Down Syndrome Association),
North America (Canadian Down Syndrome Society),
South America (e.g., Fundaciones Sindrome de Down Chile),
…well, maybe not in Antarctica?
Please take the time on 21 March to recognize and celebrate our fellow humans who have Down syndrome. And don’t limit yourself to this particular day…make it year ‘round. Also, please celebrate the efforts by the many families, special educators, policy makers, medical professionals, and others who work to ensure that individuals with Down syndrome can have success-filled, fulfilling, happy, independent, and long lives.
