Assessing decoding competence
What can one learn from this DLD Teaching Tutorial?
Remember that I’ve argued that it’s important to monitor students’ behavior? How about behavior in decoding?
Erica Lembke and Todd Busch provided a readily applicable guide to monitoring generalized decoding competence. Many readers may recognize the idea as “curriculum-based measurent.” That’s correct!
The description that Lembke and Busch wrote is quite clear and immediately applicable. It explains why and how to monitor students’ reading perforamance. Get a free copy at Tutorial #4: Curriculum-Based Measurement in Reading: Oral Fluency Instruction from http://TeachingLD.org.
Now, no one should think this tutorial is a complete assessment of reading competence. There are plenty of others, not just about decoding competence, but also about comprehension. Stay tuned. I’ll drop a note about comprehension soon!
