Hey, folks. This post is just a promotion of a new book by some pals: Specially Designed Instruction: A Definitive Guide. The book is by a whole big batch of my friends, so I’m biased about its content. But I think it is dang good.
Weiss, M. P., Flagella-Luby, M. N, Goran, L., & Bateman, D. F. (2025). Specially designed instruction: The definitive guide. Bloomsbury.
This book is a keeper for practicing special educators. It goes from IEPs to solving specific problems. It explains variations across environments. The foundational idea is how to provide the mandated instruction that law (and reasoned analysis) mandates.
It’s splendidly organized, clearly written, and very practical. I encourage Dear Readers to review it. They can use it for their teacher education classes and for their own practice. And, as they do so, they can know that they are not just referring to pie in the sky. These authors bring evidence to bear on the issues they discuss. Highly recommended.
I know that readers can order it from the oligarchs (example: companies that capitalize on Brazil’s forests?), but I encourage you to get it from the publisher directly or your local independent bookseller.1
Of course, you should know that I’m not getting any kickbacks from the publisher, your local bookshop, or Amazon (teehee) for the recommendations. I will admit, however, that I got a free copy hand-delivered by one of the authors. (Enter your guesses about the giver in the comments.)
Footnote
Knowing what I do about the publishing process, I hope you know that when you buy from the original publisher, your purchase funds are much more likely to go to the actual authors than the big companies. Authors make, maybe, 10-12% from sales by the original publishers, They likely make 6-9% from sales by the Big Dogs. For those who have written textbooks for classes, we know that the publishers’ contracts are not in our favor…and then the favor goes downhill from there.
A great book, I am sure, but the “author” who is to deliver the copy in person - questionable. 😉Congratulations to all!
